What are buoyancy aids?

Buoyancy aids are a form of personal flotation device, classified as offering 50n of buoyancy, differing from life jackets (which are 150n/275n), as they are designed as a flotation aid for a conscious swimmer while treading water and aren’t capable of supporting the wearer’s full body weight and will not turn the wearer onto their back or guarantee to keep their face out of the water.

What is the difference between a buoyancy aid & a life jacket?

As mentioned, a buoyancy aid is designed to assist a user when entering the water, acting as a flotation aid and requiring the user to be conscious. However, a life jacket is capable of keeping a person’s head and face above water, even if unconscious.

Another difference is the materials each device is made from, with buoyancy aids using a foam material to assist the user, whereas life jackets utilise gas cylinders to keep you afloat. We also have a range of life jackets available online, including multiple sizes and variations.

How should a buoyancy aid fit?

When wearing a buoyancy aid, you want it to be a snug fit that should not move, such as sliding up and down or sliding side to side. A good way to test if you have the right size aid is to fit and adjust the jacket and then lift it from the shoulders, and if the jacket can be pulled over the head then you should select a smaller size.
